HACC services are available to:
- A frail, older person
- A person with a disability
- A carer of a frail, older person or a person with a disability
HACC services also cater for some particular needs - for example:
- A person with dementia
- A carer of a person with dementia
- A person living with HIV/AIDS
- A War Veteran/Widow
HACC services need to know if people are eligible for a service, what kind of assistance they need and work out who has priority as there is a big demand. This is done by an upfront assessment of a person's need to receive a service. In some cases, a service will already be serving its maximum number of people. The service may place people on a waiting list until a vacancy arises, or refer them to another appropriate service.
If a service is not available because there is a waiting list, you may wish to contact your local member of parliament to inform them of your situation. A list of local members of parliament in Eastern Sydney is available at Resources.
Some people are not eligible to receive a HACC service because they already receive similar government subsidised services, or they are living in a hostel or nursing home where similar services are provided. If people are not eligible for a HACC service the service provider will explain why a service cannot be provided.
